The Western Investment Club (WIC) is the second largest club at the University of Western Ontario. Membership has risen to over 600 members.
The club exists to assist the student body in gaining a clear understanding of capital markets and career opportunities that are available in the investment industry. This is achieved through managing a portfolio valued at over $100,000 (of REAL money), holding seminars with industry professionals, providing opportunities to network at social events, and developing members communication skills through weekly presentations and panel discussions.
Our philosophy is to seek growth at a reasonable price. While all suggestions are welcomed for review, the portfolio team is instructed to follow a certain criteria when selecting companies for presentation to the club.
Some of the things we look for are: a solid management team, earnings growth potential, dividend record, outlook for products/services, and low valuations.
It is important that the philosophy of long term investing be continually recognized and adhered to over market timing and other short term investment strategies. As a result of this, a nominal value of the portfolio is allocated to speculative securities. It is primarily made up of quality securities with promising potential for long term growth.
